The Western Research Institute (WRI) has congratulated the new Minister for Rural Health and Communications, Senator The Hon Bridget McKenzie, and the new Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, The Hon Dr John McVeigh MP, on their appointments to Cabinet.
“Bridget was a key influencer in establishing the Senate Inquiry into the Supply of Health Services and Medical Professionals in Rural Areas which made important findings about the need for more investment in rural medical schools” said WRI Associate Mark Burdack.
“With a background in education, Senator McKenzie has also played an important role in supporting regional tertiary education.
“Her appointment to this key portfolio will bring practical experience, and an understanding of the circumstances of people living in inland and other regional communities".
On the appointment of Dr McVeigh as Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, Mr Burdack said:
“It is great to see an inland member of Parliament take on the crucial role of Minister for Regional Development and Local Government.
“Dr McVeigh's background in industry, local and State Governments, and as Chair of the Select Committee on Regional Development and Decentralisation, will bring needed consistency to this key policy area”.
WRI looks forward to meeting with the new Ministers in the new year to set out key priorities on inland and Murray Darling Basin development, and support for investment in business and employment growth.
